Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin sheets of porcelain that your dentist permanently bonds to the front of your natural teeth. Veneers are custom-made in the enamel color of your choice to fit the exact shape of your teeth. Veneers make your teeth look straight and even and your smile brilliant and beautiful.

What conditions can veneers address?

Veneers can improve the appearance of many cosmetic dental concerns, such as:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Uneven teeth
  • Unusual spacing between teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Overly small or large teeth
  • Severely discolored teeth
  • Worn or chipped teeth

Veneers are sometimes an alternative to dental crowns. The experienced dentists at Lakeside Family Dentistry can completely transform your smile with veneers.

What happens when I get veneers?

The skilled professionals at Lakeside Family Dentistry offer standard veneers and Lumineers®. Lumineers are a prepless option that doesn’t require enamel removal so they can be completed in one appointment. Standard veneers are less bulky than Lumineers, but they require two appointments. Typically, no anesthesia is needed at either appointment.

During the first visit, your dentist prepares your teeth to receive the veneers by performing pain-free resurfacing of the surface of the receiving teeth. They also take an impression to make a mold which the lab uses to fabricate your custom veneers.

During the next visit, your provider performs a specialized cleaning to help your tooth enamel bond with the dental adhesive. After coating your tooth with this adhesive, your dentist carefully places the veneer and uses a special light to set the bond. Once they place all your veneers, your dentist gives you detailed instructions about how to care for your stunning new smile.

Will my veneers be permanent?

Porcelain veneers are highly durable and give you a beautiful stain-resistant smile that can last as long as 15 years. However, normal wear and tear will eventually cause them to need replacing.

A good at-home oral health care routine that includes regular brushing and flossing, as well as routine dental visits, can help extend the life of your veneers. Your dentist gives you detailed instructions for the best way to care for your veneers so you can enjoy your beautiful new smile for years to come.
